Lorraine Code named distinguished woman philosopher for 2009


 


Lorraine Code, a distinguished research professor emerita in philosophy, social & political thought and women’s studies at York University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, can now add distinguished woman philosopher to her list of accomplishments.


 


The US-based Society for Women in Philosophy  has named Code the 2009 distinguished woman philosopher for her work, achievements and contributions to the support of women in philosophy and to the discipline of philosophy. Each year, through the Eastern Division of the society, one woman is chosen for the honour. Code is only the second Canadian woman to receive this distinction.


 


Lorraine Code was member of our IAPh’s Board from 2000 to 2006.

Birge Krondorfer received Käthe Leichter-Prize


 


The Austrian philosopher Birge Krondorfer has received the Käthe-Leichter-Preis. This prize is awarded by the State of Austria for excellent activities in women’s studies, gender studies and gender equality at the labour market. Birge Krondorfer is working in feminist theory and practice for a long time. She was one of the main organizers of the IAPh symposium in Klagenfurt 1986. In 1990 she has co-founded the Frauenhetz in Vienna, a center for feminist education, culture and politics and she is still working there; furthermore she is teaching at different universities and she was part of "Migrants on the Labour Market", a project of the European Union. Feminism, Science, and Values

In June 2010, the International Association of Women Philosophers (http://www.iaph-philo.org/) will be meeting at The University of Western Ontario. This will be the organization’s first meeting in Canada and only its second meeting in North America. Co-hosted by the Rotman Institute for Science and Values and the Department of Philosophy, the conference is scheduled to take place just before the international conference on science and values organized by the Rotman Institute.


 


The members of the conference organizing committee are: Gillian Barker, Ariella Binik, Samantha Brennan, Helen Fielding, Katy Fulfer-Smith, Elisa Hurley, Tracy Isaacs, Carolyn McLeod, Karen Nielsen, Kathleen Okruhlik, and Angelique Petropanagos.
